Primarily a Snapchat filter is a design that you can overlay onto a Snapchat photo you take. Snapchat Geofilter is nothing but a frame or filter you get on the snap when visiting an event or place.

A geo-filter as the name suggests is geographically based filters. A Snapchat user can use the filter at the designated areas on any Snap they take and later upload it on Snapchat Story.

Initially, the Geofilters were only available through a controlled application process by Snapchat. The services were opened up to the general public in 2015. Starting then, anybody could create and upload a custom Snapchat filter to an area of their choice. While there is still a short approval process, these filters are, in general, cost-efficient and widely available.

These filters are a great and fun thing to do for increasing your brand’s face value on social media. These create a buzz about your company is in that area and also is automatically shared with hundreds of people for free.

Types of Snapchat Geofilter

Snapchat provides a vast variety of different kinds of Geofilter. It is categorized in terms of the place, event, and cause. The list given below will guide you through the different kinds of it to help you shortlist your preference better:

Sponsored Geofilters

Sponsored Geofilters are custom overlays that can be applied to private pictures and videos sent from Snapchat users. It can be a target to specific areas (such as proximity to stores) or can be across large areas.

Sponsored filters are mostly leveraged by large brands, as they can be quite expensive.

On-Demand Geofilters

On-Demand Geofilters are similar to Sponsored Geofilters, but much more affordable and are used is very small localized areas. Therefore, these filters can cost as little as $5 an hour and are perfect for small-business conferences, weddings, birthday parties, or events.

Events social media marketing teams can use these filters for promoting the event. It’s also a fun edition to add and spice your wedding, like a memorial tag. These can also be used for marathons, parties at clubs, large gatherings, etc.

Community Geofilters

A community filter is defined as “a free filter for a location or moment that is special to you.” With community filters, Snapchat encourages users to, “Share some pride in your city, university, a local landmark, or any public location.”

Why make a Snapchat Geofilter?

Snapchat Geo filters will promote your brand or event in front of a crowd.

Geofilters are popular amongst bars, public attractions (think museums, landmarks), restaurants, and businesses. Since becoming available to the general public, they’ve become a staple at weddings, family reunions, college sporting events, and any event at which you can expect a large crowd.

The additional point to this feature is that no one has to search for you. It appears when anyone using Snapchat is in proximity to you.

It’s a great opportunity for social media marketing, especially if you’re looking to use Snapchat for business. You also attract a huge crowd of a varied age as Snapchat has become a popular media for every generation. Users absolutely love Snap.

Geofilters grab attention, are cost-effective, and most importantly, a simple way to get your brand promoted in the public eye. Furthermore, we know that consumers love them.

How to create Snapchat Geofilter?

Finally, here are the steps you need to create a Snapchat Geofilter. Its a really simple way to promote your space and a very easy one too. Follow these steps and your filter is ready to spread the news!!

 Step 1:

First, open the Snapchat website https://create.snapchat.com/ to start with your filter creation.

Step 2:

Now to upload your own design that you made in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or any other design tool, click on the yellow “Upload” button in the top left corner. Keep in mind, your design needs to be a PNG file that is 1090px wide by 1920px tall, under 300KB, and has a transparent background.

Step 3:

Design your filter on Snapchat’s website, simply use the provided tool. You can use the drop-down menu on the left side of the screen to select the occasion you’re celebrating, add your own text in different colors, fonts, and sizes, and more. You can also use Canva.

Canva is a graphic design software with lots of built-in customizable images/stickers, frames, and other design elements. It’s an ideal place to start if you want more freedom than using a template or Confetti app but still need read-made elements to be part of the design. It is also a great place to pick up creative ideas for your design.

Tip: Remember! that your Snapchat filter can’t contain information like URLs or social media handles.

Step 4:

Next, you’ll have to select your dates and times, or the days and hours on which you’ll be able to access your custom Geofilter. When you’re finished selecting your time and dates, press “Next.”

For selecting the date, you have to use the calendar on the left side of the screen and choose your desired start and end date.

For selecting the time, you have to use the tool on the right and select your start and end time for each day that your Snapchat filter is live.

The maximum date range for an on-demand Geofilter is 30 days. The shortest is for an hour. Although you can’t run one filter for more than 30days, you could create the same filter again and submit it for the following 30 days. That way you exceed the time of one filter design.

It is still advised to change the Geoflilter once in 2 months at least to keep a creative touch to the whole idea.

Step 5:

Furthermore, you will have to select the location. If somebody opens Snapchat near your location (and has their location services enabled), they’ll be able to see your filter when it’s live. When you’re satisfied with your location and price, press “Checkout”

For getting a precise location, type your desired area or city into the search bar. For example, I wanted to create a filter surrounding my event, so to get closer I searched “Bengaluru”

Now, for selecting a specific area for the Geofilter to work use the “Draw Fence” tool. Draw a circle around your desired area. Completing this step will also give you the price of your custom Snapchat Geofilter, based on your dates, times, and desired location.

Upon clicking the next button you’ll be taken to a payment page where you can confirm your order.

You can change the order whilst it’s under review but once it has been approved you would need to cancel and resubmit the order to make any changes.

Step 6:

The next page will lead u to the final page. You have to fill up about specific fields to finalize your payment. Once your payment is done, you have to wait for a few days up to a week to get the confirmation mail. It does take up a little time to come online so plan accordingly beforehand.

Step 7:

Once everything is done and dusted its time to promote the Geofilters. An easier way to do it will be to tell your employees to use the filter and share it with or on their Snapchat account.

You can also promote your filter on other platforms like through Facebook ads and promoted tweets. These will show to users in the area and make them aware of it even if they aren’t actively about to take a snap and browsing filters. Although you can’t link to the filter you can talk about it in the ad copy of your ads.

You can also encourage people to submit more photos while you can make collages for office and social media. Collect all the photos and share them on social media to create a buzz among people on the heavy use of the filter.

Cost of Geofilter on Snapchat?

Well, this is a question that keeps popping up every now and then while we talk about Snapchat Geofilter. The major factors that affect the cost are the time and area of the filter. The longer the time and larger the area is the cost keeps getting higher. Though its a very affordable service and works exceptionally well on one-two days events.

Snapchat Geofilter Guidelines

Before you get too excited and start designing your new Snapchat filter. let’s cover the guidelines that are important while handling or using Geofilter.

As expected, the artwork submitted needs to be original for copyright issues. Anything that they suspect may violate a copyright infringement will likely be denied – or at least, investigated. And yes – this does include logos and trademarks (except for college and university logos submitted by authorized officials).

The artwork also has to be just that – artwork. No photographs will be accepted. Requiring original artwork also ensures that it can be catered to Snapchat’s dimensions. Basically, the filter shouldn’t cover too much of the phone screen as to not negatively affect user experience.

As for the included text, it can’t include any phone numbers, social media tags, or hashtags.

If you are struggling to manage multiple social media platforms or multiple social media profiles, I really recommend you to use social media management tools like Ubercircle. It helps you to schedule and manage your social profiles all in one single dashboard.

Wrapping Up

Here is a short summary of what you must keep in mind:

  1. If you do not have the permission to utilise an image, name, or logo, then the best would be not to use it.
  2. Remember that if you create a geofilter submit the business name you use to Snapchat.
  3. Geofilters are a graphic type of filter.
  4. Remember that 2 lines of non-stylized text is permitted.
  5. make sure to have no hashtags
  6. Make a design as minimalist as possible so that you do not to cover up the photos people click.
  7. The filter must have the ‘geo’ element. This means it should be directly related to a location.

So now I guess everything is simpler for you to go ahead with making your own Snapchat filter. If you face trouble using or following the steps you can leave a query and we will get back to you.
